Granite's Minerals

Quartz
Quartz is a common mineral that is found in many different types of rocks. Impurities in the rock at the time of formation cause the quartz crystal to produce different colours. Quartz can be coloured yellow, milky white, rose, brown to black, blue, and the best-known colour, purple amethyst.

Feldspar
Feldspar is the most abundant mineral in rocks that are located at or near the earth's surface. Feldspar can have a glassy white, blue, green, pink or red crystal. When feldspars are exposed to the atmosphere they weather easily. Clays are formed by weathered feldspar. Kaolinite is the highest quality of the feldspar clays used by potters.

Hornblende
Hornblende is a mineral that contains magnesium, iron, silica and aluminium. Hornblende is black, brown and green in colour. It occurs in crystals of many igneous rocks.

Mica
Mica can be clear, black, green, red, yellow, brown, purple lapidolite and other colours too. Clear mica was named Muscovite because it was found near Moscow. It was used as window glass in Muscovite's homes. Muscovite contains water, which helps to make it clear. Biotite mica is dark green to black in colour because it contains metals such as iron and magnesium.

Advantages

Granite has many advantages over other solid materials and other types of stone Granite is natural

Granite is a natural stone with a great deal of natural beauty. It is made up of different minerals such as quartz, mica and feldspar, where some manmade stones and other materials contain chemicals. Every tile is unique, with each stage of its life adding to its appearance.

Granite is very durable – Granite is one of the hardest stones on earth - only diamonds are harder. This makes it very hard to scratch, and if it is maintained properly, granite will last for many, many years. In fact, the granite parts of a building outlast any other construction materials used. Every piece of granite you see has already been on earth for millions of years. The only difference now is that it’s polished!

Granite is easy to maintain – After being sealed and cleaned regularly with the proper products, you do not have to worry about stains, repairs or replacing a granite surface. Granite is much easier to maintain than alternate surfaces such as marble, slate, Corian, arborite and linoleum. These are all costly to repair.

Granite has much variety – Nature has provided us with hundreds of different colours and patterns.

Granite versus Corian – Corian is very expensive compared to granite tiles. When in need of repairs, Corian is time consuming to fix and can be costly. There are many ways in which Corian can be damaged where granite is more resistant: scratches, burns, and heavy objects being dropped on them, for example. Granite has a more prestigious appearance than Corian.
