The Merlo Roto 38.16S is a self-propelled and remote
controlled:
Access platform
Crane
Concrete mixer/pourer
Materials handler
The Fell Partnership was seriously considering purchasing a
second Merlo to ease the work load on the
Merlo P 30.13, so Nick Fell spoke to South West
Handling, where the first one was purchased. He subsequently
flew out to Italy with the Manager, Louise Winsor, for a
tour of the Merlo factory. Nick was so taken with the Merlo
Roto and the precision of the manufacturing process that he
made the decision there and then to add this machine to his
collection of toys!
The weekend the new Merlo Roto arrived he was like a child
that had just landed in Lego Land! Our first Merlo is still
very hard at work, alongside the Roto. The huge
advantage of using the Merlos are that work is much safer,
faster and more efficient. The Merlo Roto offers tremendous
reach, along with the ability to work in confined spaces, on
hills and rough terrain - often the sort of sites where The
Fell Partnership operates. In these situations it would be
almost impossible for conventional machines to gain access.
The Roto is able to be on site quickly and get in and out
with the minimum of fuss.
It wasn’t just the Merlo Roto that was purchased, but also
the attachments that make it a truly versatile machine.
Nearly all of the functions of the machine can be carried
out from a remote control device without anyone being in the
cab. This means that the operator can be an extra pair of
hands, making the most efficient use of labour. It also
allows the operator the best possible view when operating
the machine. The forks are always useful, especially when it
comes to unloading deliveries. The amazing 415° rotation
makes unloading on small sites much quicker and easier.
The front opening access platform is an essential tool for
chimney and roof repairs. Nick has the first Merlo ‘roofers’
platform to be imported into the UK. Nick said, “Working
from the front of this basket is far safer, and causes far
less slate damage than conventional roofing ladders.
Attaching the winch to the Merlo Roto turns this versatile
machine into a mobile crane. The large bucket means that
spoil can be quickly moved around site, or loaded onto
vehicles such as our
tractor and
trailer for removal. The concrete mixer allows
concrete to be mixed on site and poured into difficult to
reach places. It is particularly useful when constructing
super ICF homes“ (

There are significant advantages in having a self-loading
concrete mixer on site:
1. Elimination of the waste caused by delivering an
excess of concrete
2. Efficient and quick operation in difficult to access
sites
3. A cut in waiting time and transport costs for small
quantities of product
4. Rapid production for small sites
5. Versatility to mix limited volumes
6. Ease of operation and control, even with a single
operator
